After studying at several colleges in America, he entered New York University in 1892. There he began writing for the Daily News, the Daily Graphic, the Evening Sun, and other periodicals. He also contributed to several magazines, including Cosmopolitan and Harper's Weekly.

Before becoming nationally known as a writer, Mr. Mabie served as editor of The Paper Bag. He also served as the chief editorial writer for Harper's Weekly (1910–14).

Mr. Mabie wrote over seventy books during his long career.
